弘法さん Ｋｏｂｏ－ｓａｎ

今日21日は京都東寺(http://www.toji.or.jp/)の弘法さんの日でした。温かめのお天気だったせいか、今日はもう大変な込み具合。人人人でした。アンチィークの家具、食器、着物、陶器、アートに関するもの、そしてお漬物、昆布、七味、お豆類、簪類、たこ焼き、おでん、果物、野菜と何でもありです。
東寺で毎月21日に行われます。今日は絹の着物で小紋と東山大島と留袖を買いました。いつかこれらの着物を使って、スカーフやスカート等を作ってみたいのです。第一号はこのブログでお伝えしたいと思ってます。

A antique market called Kobo-san is held on the 21st day of each month at Toji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C5%8D-ji , http://www.toji.or.jp/) about 10 minutes from Kyoto station. The tranquil temple are filled with hundreds of vendors that sells junks to treasures! They are antique kimono, furniture, plates, plants and foods. You can enjoy this cultural event! It opens around 6am and close when sunset. This market is my favorite and I got an old Hibachi pot for my vacation rental house.

可愛い籐の椅子をゲット！ I got a chair!

素敵な籐の椅子をゲットしました。宮川町のバケーションレンタルに置くか自分の所で使うかなのですが、多分私のルームメイトのタフィーの物になってしまいそう。

祇園 文豪たちの空間

今日は河原町三条の和食のお店"かた乃"(ここは一元さんはいないとの事でした）でのとっても美味しい夕食の後に、京都のギャラリーや骨董店が点在する古門前通り奥の白川畔にひっそりと佇む"富乃井"に行ってきました。ここではお食事もだしておいでになるようです。

和風のバーカウンターの窓から見えるお庭のもみじの紅葉を見ながらのお酒で一杯という素敵なところです。先代の女将がとても有名な方で司馬遼太郎や湯川秀樹が集まったところだそうです。当代のご主人も女将さんもとってもお喋り上手な素敵な方でした。でも一元さんで行けるのかな～？

写真は宮川町にある恵美須神社の"人気人よ也"のお飾りです。私はこの笹の枯れた所と可愛い紙で作ったお人形さんがいたく気に入り来年はこれをゲットするつもりです。この飾りの額は司馬遼太郎の直筆の色紙で坂本竜馬語録を引用されたものでした(他にも色々ありました）。その下は"富乃井"の女将さんがお見送りにでて下さった所でパチリ。

I had a wonderful dinner at "Katano" located nearby Sanjo and Kwaramachi-Dori. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant and you cannot get this kind of fine Japanese food outside of Japan. Today's main was Fugu (poison/blow fish) which has to be prepared by a someone who holds a licence to prepare this blow fish. I always feel uneasy when I eat Fugu because there could be a chance that I may die because of the poison from the fish. Oh yes I did not take a photo of the foods at all. It was soo good so I forgot about taking the photos. You have to have a referral to have dinner at this restaurant.  It is typically in Kyoto, and you can go to this restaurant as long as you have a referral from one of the customers.

After the dinner, I went to "Tominoi" where many famous Japanese novelist/writer (Kawabata Yasunari, Shiba Ryotaro) and a Nobel prize winner physicist were once their good customers when they were still alive. This restaurant/bar is located in Shin-Monzenmachi- dori and Shirakwa river is running next to this restaurant/bar's building. It was very relaxing especially sitting on a tatami room bar looking over the maple trees with red leaves on it.

草木彫り！ Wood carving !

今日は草木彫りの日でした。四国香川県の川添日記先生の会で京都の先生よりご指導いただいております。ここでは野山の草木を主に彫っていきます。お盆、茶たく、お棗、お茶入れ、重箱などの日常で使えるものです。丹精こめて彫られた木に美しい色合いが付けられて漆で仕上げていくのです。

あるお宅にお呼ばれしたときに使われていた食膳がこの草木彫りで、”あら～素敵ん～”と一目惚れしちゃいました。それが始まりです。今日は四角い盆に椿を彫り上げた最初の作品を、漆ぬりへと出して頂きました。出来上がりが楽しみです。私の京町家のお宿と合いそうだわ～～♪

今日は今年最後のクラスで美味しい懐石お弁当をクラスの皆さんでいただきました。ご馳走さま！

Today was my wood carving class day, and my first wood carving art was sent to a lacquer process in Kagawa-ken, Shikoku (one of the four island of Japan).  I cannot wait to see the result! The wood carving class is under Nikki-Kai originated in Shikoku. The carving are mainly for flowers and plants in nature.  I fell in love at the first sight with a try that was delicately engraved of cherry blossoms. It is an art. Since then, I decided to take this class....hopefully I could continue doing this. See my next item below:

お友達訪問！Visiting a new friend!

木曜日は最近お友達になって頂いた石Ｏちゃんを尋ねて西京極まで行って来ました! 勿論ママチャリでです(ちなみに京阪５条から西京極まで約３０分）。中華料理屋さんが食べに来るという美味しい中華屋さん, " 寒山 " でランチをしてから石Ｏちゃんのオフィスで色々なお話を伺ってきました。この石Ｏちゃんはとある大学でホスピタリテイマネージメントを教えておいでになる先生なのです。来年春オープン予定のバケーションレンタル等に関しては広報部長なみに色々とご存知なのです。アイデイアが盛り沢山で嬉しくなっちゃいます！沢山のアイデイアを頂きそして本までお借りしてきました。どうもありがとう！それに同僚の先生の方に頂いた鮭の粕漬け、とっても美味しかったです！なんて幸せ～　食べ物に弱い私です。

On Thursday, I visited my new friend in Kyoto Sai-in Area (west of the city: Hankyu Saiin Station) to get some ideas for my "machiya vacation rental project" in Gion, Kyoto. She teaches hospitality management/tourism (perfect for my new project!) at a university in Kyoto and is very resoucefull. My vacation rental would be full of  customers if she become a marketing manager for sure.  Thank you for lending me the books of Okami (general manager of Kyoto Ryokan)!  The lunch we had at a Chinease restaruant nearby was funtastic! お祝いをして頂きました！ Celebration dinner!

今日の夜は、私の不動産契約が無事終了という事で、京都で大変お世話になっている素敵な女性の方々から夕食のお誘いを受けました♪　　とっても美味しい白味噌の牡蠣鍋です！
あまりに美味しくて写真を撮るのを忘れてました。やっぱり家庭料理が一番ですね！お鍋には牡蠣の他には京豆腐、たっぷりのおネギと最後におうどんとオジヤでした。ご馳走様でした！

My girl friends threw a Nabe party for me to cerebrate to be a home owner! Nabe is a typical Japanese dish which has a soup stock/miso base which you then add vegetables, seafood, meets, and udon noodle. Rice and eggs are cooked in the stock that is left over after the noodle are eaten. Today was white miso base nabe with very flesh oysters, silk tofu, and green onions. It was so~ delicious!  I forget to take a photo....sorry that I cannot share the photos with you.

今日は12月13日の舞妓さんたちの事始めの日でした。１年の感謝をこめて舞妓さんたちが本家や得意先などへの挨拶回りをする日です。「今年もよろしゅうおたのもうします」とお家元に挨拶をしてご祝儀のを受けて精進を誓うそうです。
不動産の書類手続きも無事終わり宮川町の美味しい京風おうどんを二葉さんで食べてから宮川町の家まで工務店さんとの改装の打ち合わせに行ってきました。あいにくの雨でも私はママチャリで出かけました。祇園花見小路を抜け建仁寺をぬけて宮川町の家の近くに来たらなんだか沢山の叔父さんカメラマンで一杯になってるではないかと思いきや今日は事始めの日でした。

不動産契約日 Home called a Vacation Rental

今日は不動産契約日。そして火災保険契約も終了。ちょっとだけほっとしたかな。仮契約まで行って頂いたあーちゃん、司法書士さんをご紹介いただいた石田さん、そして不動産の前田さんありがとうございました！帰途は心休める為に私のお気に入りの鴨川に足をとめてから帰ってきました。鴨川って本当に素敵なんですよ。ず～っと見てても飽きない。太っちょの野良猫ちゃんもいて誰かかれかご飯を持ってあげてるようです。私の所が広かったらTaffyのお友達としてもう一匹ぐらい欲しい所だけどな。写真はその太っちょの“鴨ねこ”です。

これからは工務店さんや税理士さんにあったりお役所関係や備品集めそして私の苦手なホームページ作りをしたりと超忙しくなりそう。自分でも何処にこんなパワーがあったのかな～と感じてます。多分自分の好きな事とか夢に向かっているときは夢が叶う日を想像するからだと思う。勿論不安もあるのは当然ですが。色々な方々に助けて頂きながらこれからもがんばるぞ～。鉄腕アトム～～と歌いながら。この歌知ってる人いる？

Finally, the closing day had come and I also got a home insurance. I felt good but there would be a lots to do for preparing a vacation rental home. Meeting a contractor to renovate the house, tax consultant, buying some house staff and decorations, and making  a home page for the vacation rental. Oh I wish I am a tech savvy~~~

I stopped by Kamo River, my sanctuary, and enjoyed the peaceful moment. I saw some stray cats which are quite huge (or fat) for stray cats. People are bring foods for them so no doubt why they were rather fat. I wish I could get one more....if only I have a bigger place.  Here is today's Kamo river and the Kamo cat (I deiced to call him Kamo Cat).

バケーションレンタル物件見つけました！ I found a Vacation Rental House property in Gion (Miyagawa-Cho), Kyoto

バケーションレンタル用の家を祇園界隈の宮川町に見つけました。今はやりの路地裏です。4条と5条の間にある宮川筋という古くからある御茶屋さん街で舞妓さんや芸妓さんが行きかう通りの路地裏です。ご近所のカワユイ紅茶カフェに入ると舞妓さんが普段着のお着物で午後の紅茶を飲みにきてはります（京都弁？）。あのＮＨＫで有名になった”あじき路地”もすぐ傍です。というわけで明日は契約です。ちょっとドキドキしてますが契約のあとは改装や手続きで大忙しになりそうです。嵐の前の静けさとはこのことです。
I found a small terrace house in Gion Geisha District called Miyagawa-cho. About 7 minutes walk from the to Shi-jyo Keihan Train station and 5 minutes to Go-jyo Keihan Train Station. It is a prime location! I always see Maiko/Geisha in this neighborhood. Many restaurants and bars are nearby. You just walk home after dinner. Tomorrow is the closing day! I am excited but a bit nervous as well. This is going to be my first vacation rental home!!!  I will give you more details later on.

浜作 料理教室 京都祇園 Hamasaku Cooking Class at Gion, Kyoto

今日は京都八坂神社そばの割烹料理の浜作のお料理教室の日です。今日で3回目。ご覧の様にとっても美味しいお食事を頂ながら先生より日本料理の作り方を教えて頂きます。まあなんて贅沢な時間。やはり日本ならではです。今日はしっかり15分前に私のママチャリで到着。鴨川沿いをぶんぶん飛ばしていったのでちゃんと時間前に到着。先生のお怒りを買わずにすみました。ママチャリで行くのは私ぐらい。皆さんお上品そうな方ばかりで～～～～
ところで浜作はチャーリーチャップリンや英国のプリンスチャールスそして川端康成などの著名人をお客様としたお店です。英国のエリザベス女王が京都にこられた際にとある旅館にお泊りのときは浜作の花板さんが出向かれてお料理されたそうです。

I went to my monthly cooking class at Hamasaku, Gion Kyoto. This place is famous for a traditional Japanese cuisine. Once the famous Charlie Chaplin, Prince Charles of England and Kawabata Yasunari, a famous Japanese novelist were their customers. The below is today's menu and dishes I had during the cooking class! Yami ~ sorry that I cannot share them with you...  Once I opened my vacation rental accomodation or B&B (guest house), I would like to set up a mini Japanese cooking class! What do you think?

It is getting cold here....I don't know if I could bear this cold weather in Kyoto.  Since I do not have a car anymore and my main transportation is a my Ma-ma-chari (bicycle that used by many Moms in Japan).  I used to drive everywhere and minimize the exposure to the cold weather of Chicago and to stay warm inside. Yes, I at least have Taffy (my American cat) to cuddle with.... Taffy usually does not come to me when I go to bed but winter.

I had lunch at Ah-chan's today and she made me Nishin-Udon which was delicious! Yami Yami!  As usual, she asked me if everything is all right with my life. She is such a sweet person. I appreciate for all my friends for their friendships and supports. I am very fortunate to have great friends and family.    Well, it's a dinner time and I am going to visit Ichiensou ( http://www.ichiensou.com/ ) tonight to have Okonomi-yaki with Yashi-san and Sunam-chan.

京都も寒くなってきました。なんだかアメリカに住んでる頃はいつも車の中か温かい家の中で軽装なので肩がこる事はなかったけど、日本に帰ってきてから車なし、そしてママチャリが主な交通手段ときてるから寒さが肌身にしみるのです。でもこのほうが自然な感じがする。猫のTaffy（ターフィー）がアメリカにいたときよりも擦り寄ってきてくれるのは寒さのせいかも。お部屋は暖房つけてるけど何となく寒いわ。

今日はあーちゃん宅で”ニシン入りおうどん”をご馳走になりましたん。京都では甘く煮たニシンをおうどんに入れて食べるようですがこれが又おいしいのです。京都に引越ししてきてからいつも私の事を気遣って頂いてます。アメリカでも沢山の素敵なお友達に囲まれていた私は幸せものでしたが京都でも同じのようです。私の宝物です。ありがとう！
夕食は京都祇園にあるゲストハウス一円相のオーナーやしさんとスナムちゃんを尋ねていく予定です。この2人も温かい人たちです。これからも宜しく！

また来てね～ Miss my friend from Miyazaki...

Hi. I started telling my friends who live abroad that I have a blog now.  Hopefully everybody can learn how I am doing and about Kyoto.  My friend from Miyazaki left yesterday after spending for 2 wks in this tiny apartment! We went to many places in Kyoto and Nara. It was nice and a good break for me.  My friend came to Kyoto by "Miyazaki Car Ferry" a boat from Miyazaki to Osaka.  She only paid for 20,000 yen for the first class ticket (both way) with a private room. Well, back to realty now. Oh yes, I need to go for Christmas shopping for my niece. Yes, I am in Japan but many Japanese do cerebrate Christmas for fun for some people and for truly religious reasons for others.

昨日宮崎のお友達が大阪からフェリーで帰って行きました。なんと夜7時に出て朝8時に市内傍の宮崎港着なので楽チン。船には大きな無料の大浴場もあるのです。会員になるとお誕生日は半額だから個室で往復2万円又は6人の相部屋で往復1万円以下で宮崎にいけちゃうのです。詳細はhttp://miyazakicarferry.com/

宮崎の宣伝はさておいて、なんと2人で2週間もこの狭いマンションで過ごしたのです。社会人になってもこんな狭い所に住める自分にびっくりしてるけどプラスもう1人ですよ。でも目の前は私の大好きな鴨川。歩いて1分もかからないから狭くてもよしとしよう。2人で京都巡りをして奈良と神戸まで出かけていきました。急に不動産屋さんに会ったりとかであまりゆっくり出来なかったと思うのでちょっと悪かったな～って思ってます。次回はもっとゆっくり案内が出来るといいのだけど。それともゲストハウスのお手伝いをしてくれるかな～。近いうちに京都と奈良の写真をアップロードしますね。さてと、今日は今から姪っ子へのクリスマスのお買い物に行って来ます。そうですクリスマスです。日本に帰ってもクリスマスをしないと淋しいです！　それでは.

ブログを始めました！

皆さん元気ですか？
京都に引越ししてやっとブログを始める余裕が出てきました。これからはメールではなく皆さんにこのブログで私の近況を知って頂けると思います！京都に引越ししてきてあっという間に３ヶ月が過ぎて行きました。京都弁もちょっとだけ覚えましたよん。毎日のように不動産回りや物件探しで明け暮れていますが楽しいことも一杯です。美味しいお食事処とか素敵な観光名所はすぐ傍だし！勿論日本はローソンのおにぎりだって超美味しいですよん～(アメリカ帰りの私にはです）。ちょっとめげそうになったりするけどそれは持ち前とアメリカ仕込の楽天的な性格でなんとか乗り切れそうです。京都ではとても親切な素敵な方々にお会いしていろいろと助けて頂いております。特にあーちゃんに大変お世話になっています。感謝です　（ふＯＯさん、ありがとうございます。）アメリカや日本各地のお友達へ。

I got my blog!

Hello everyone,

Hope everyone is doing well. I finally got my blog and hope everybody can see how I am doing in Japan. It has already been for 3 months since I moved back to Japan. I still cannot believe that I am living in Kyoto now. I am doing well (especially eating well!) and meeting new people and visiting temples/shrines, eating fantastic Japanese foods, going to free markets, and wondering around Kyoto by my bicycle. Kyoto is  a fantastic place to live and visit. I am happy when I ride a bike along the Kamo River, clear water, birds are having bath or catching fishes, people are jogging, walking, or playing guitar, etc. Just peaceful. Anyway, I will try to update my status as much as I can from now on.
